The State of OpenSciEd in 2023

 


At the time of this writing, it is mid-October 2023 and OpenSciEd is still making remarkable strides! This blog post is just to catch folks up on the status of their OER instructional materials development progress.

Elementary (K-5)

The K-5 field test began in Fall of 2023 and right now Round 1 of the field test is underway. The K-5 OpenSciEd materials will see two (2) units field tested in 2023-24 and two (2) more field tested in 2024-25. When released, there will be 4 OpenSciEd units in each grade level K-5. Middle School (6-8)

The 6-8 field test has ended and all of the materials have been released! You can learn more about them and access those materials here:

High School (9-11)

The 9-11 field test is complete and the units are currently under review and revision. In August 2023, the first of the units in each grade level was released. You can learn more about the 9-11 materials form these resources:

Test Design and Item Specifications (12/27)

Science Updates Test Design and Item Specifications for the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) for grades 5, 8, and high school are now available on the Science Assessment webpage .  The documents describe how clusters (stimulus and item sets) and standalone items for the WCAS assessments are developed to assess the Washington State 2013 K-12 Science Learning Standards ( Next Generation Science Standards ). The documents include a test design section followed by an item specification section. The test design section includes information about the organization of the WCAS, the item types used, and an overview of the science standards. The item specification section includes a small sample of specifications that are based on the Performance Expectations (PEs) in the standards. From Museum of Flight: Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) Recruitment now underway!

FROM THIS PAGE: [ LINK ] Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is an online distance learning course and summer experience specifically designed for high school sophomores and juniors interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The online curriculum is a University of Washington college course focused on NASA’s space exploration program as well as topics in earth and space science. If they successfully complete the online curriculum, students are invited to participate in multi-day summer experiences that provide them to the opportunity to work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students and STEM educators.
