Summer PD Opportunity for Science Teachers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center

Science Education Partnership 2021

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is looking for teachers to join the 2021 Science Education Partnership (SEP). This year we will be hosting a virtual (or virtual-hybrid) program that focuses on cancer biology, biotechnology, and scientific mentorship. We are particularly looking for teachers that are teaching Cell Cycle and Growth & Development in Winter or Spring Quarter this school year to participate in a paid research study. Please reach out to rwu@fredhutch.org to find out more.

Science Education Partnership (SEP) -  Application and Information

The Science Education Partnership (SEP) provides Washington State secondary science teachers with mentored research experiences, professional development, access to resources, and a collaborative learning community. Teachers outside of WA state are also encouraged to apply and will be invited to participate in the live remote learning sessions.

  • July 8-Aug 6, 2021(With Opening Day workshop May 19, 2021, Fall Kickoff on Sept 18, 2021, and Reflection Day on May 1, 2022)

The program includes:

  • A 4-week virtual (or virtual-hybrid) Summer Session that includes direct experience working with research scientists and time to develop a curriculum project

  • Meeting times throughout the school year to prepare for the experience, reflect on its impacts, and bring the larger community of teachers together. If the program is virtual this summer, training on how to use the kit materials will take place during the school year.

  • Access to our extensive Kit Loan Program of molecular biology resources

  • Stipend: $1,500, WA STEM Clock Hours and UW Credit Available

We recognize that this summer will be a needed break for teachers and their families. As we transition into a remote program for 2021, we plan to hold shorter daily sessions.

SEP was designed and developed in concert with teachers and is designed to meet their specific needs. Teachers join a professional learning community of teachers, scientists, and others with a strong interest in collaboration and science teaching. SEP teachers have ongoing free access not only to the SEP molecular biology kits and equipment, but also to technical support, scientists, surplus lab items, and rich interactions with other science education professionals. Additional funding is available for those teachers who teach in communities with large populations of students underrepresented in science, come from those communities themselves, or would otherwise have financial barriers to participation.

Applications are due March 31, 2021 but teachers are encouraged to apply early to participate in our Spring 2021 research.

Email rwu@fredhutch.org if you'd like to join one of our info sessions:

  • Wed 1/20, 11-11:30

  • Wed 1/27, 11-11:30 & 4:30-5:00p

  • Wed 2/3, 11-11:30 & 4:30-5:00p
