Climate Program Office News Flash: Register for the Stay-In-stitute for Climate Change Education

Due to the pandemic and for the safety of our communities, the Climate Program Office are partnering with Climate Generation and the Wild Center's Youth Climate Program on the next annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education as a virtual conference!

Educators from all backgrounds and subjects are invited to attend our Stay-In-stitute for Climate Change Education July 22 - 24, and learn new tools, skills, and resources to teach climate change!

Stay-In-stitute for Climate Change Education

This three-day experience will take you beyond your computer screen, and into your backyard and neighborhood to do authentic scientific and social data collection, move your body, and make observations of the world around you.

 

Join a network of teachers from across the country dedicated to teaching climate change as an interdisciplinary issue!

·         Use phenomena and place-based learning to ignite curiosity

Our team is coming to your screens this summer

 

For the safety of our communities, the Summer Institute will be held as a virtual conference. The Climate Program Office is joining two great partners--Climate Generation and The Wild Center's Youth Climate Program--to organize the Stay-In-stitute.

 

Join together with educators from around the country for a virtual training on climate change education! Gain the skills, tools, and resources to teach climate change concepts and empower students in all subject areas, and receive ongoing support throughout the year.

The online curriculum is a University of Washington college course focused on NASA’s space exploration program as well as topics in earth and space science. [STATE-LEVEL] ASSESSMENT SHOULD NOT DRIVE INSTRUCTION

Regional Science Coordinators are developing an online orientation class for the new Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). We have involved OSPI’s Science Assessment lead, Dawn Cope and OSPI’s Director of K-12 Science, Ellen Ebert, in the process as well as Lois Sherwood from WSTA. In our first planning meeting, I wanted to hear the most important message from each person at the [virtual] table. Dawn Cope of the assessment department was the first to speak up and quite pointedly said, “assessment does not drive instruction.” That pretty much spoke for the rest of us.
