OpenSciEd "Try-Outs" in WA: Introductions to released units and the ability to borrow kits!

Announcing MS teachers: OpenSciEd materials "try-outs"

OpenSciEd is a partnership of the NGSS brain-trust folks and several big foundations. They have been developing a complete 6-8 scope and sequence as Open Educational Resources (OERs).

NWESD, together with ESD 114 and ESD 112 are supporting people in using these units by providing a "try out" service. With the help of the ClimeTime Climate Science Proviso, NWESD has purchased all of the materials for 5 of the 6 currently-released units and NWESD regional districts will be able to check these out for teachers to use so they can "try out" teaching a unit!

Professional Learning First!

Teachers must first complete some 6-hours of online introductory classes to qualify to check the materials out (https://bit.ly/gettingtoknow-openscied).

The "Trying-Out" Second!

The check-out itself will be via PO through the Science Materials Center (SMC) with a restock/refurb feel of $185 per unit. Checking-out the kits is being arranged through Nancy Menard (nmenard@nwesd.org) at this time. If teachers can complete the PD by 6/22, they will be lined-up to attend the last hour (a Zoom meeting) on either 6/22 or 6/24 from 2-3 PM (the date is dependent on which unit they sign up for). After that, we will build an online module around the recorded Zoom meetings and it will become asynchronous.

WA Dept of Ecology PD Course: Sustainable Design - Innovation to Reduce Global Impacts

The Washington State Department of Ecology is pleased to announce an asynchronous  online course for  for Teachers of Grades 3-8: Sustainable Design: Innovation to Reduce Global Im pacts When: Starts February 1st. Open for three weeks. Earn 10 STEM Clock hours ($30). How: Registration is a mere $10 and you can do so on  P dEnroller .   Explore Sustainable Design and Green Chemistry through an asynchronous Canvas Course. The course will guide you through an introduction to green chemistry and sustainable design, include classroom lessons that incorporate science and engineering, provide green chemistry career explorations, highlight freely available resources and provide some time for implementation planning.   Initially designed for 6th-8th grade classrooms but additional resources for upper elementary have been incorporate as many of the concepts are relevant and transferable.   If you want to take the course but the $10 is a barrier, please let us know. Recruiting the next cohort of the Hutch Teacher Fellowship!

Attention teachers within commuting distance to South Lake Union!!   The Hutch Fellowship for Excellence in STEM Teaching is a two-summer program for secondary science educators seeking an in-depth biomedical research experience at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. The Fellowship provides financial support for a total of $20,000 per Fellow. The program engages teachers in two summers of biomedical research experience in a Fred Hutch lab, curriculum design and scientific communication projects, and additional school year follow-up. Teachers design innovative curriculum materials to bridge the research experience with their own classrooms. The program is designed for middle and high school life science teachers, although it is open to other STEM teachers as well. Applications are due by March 15th, 2024.
