Climate Science Ocean Acidification Workshop for Teachers at Padilla Bay

Carbonated Water: Teaching ocean acidification and
climate change the Pacific Northwest

A Professional Development workshop for
Middle and High School Teachers

Thursday, October 3 and Friday October 4, 2019, 9:00-4:30
Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve - Mount Vernon, WA


     

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Gain knowledge of climate change and ocean acidification in the Pacific Northwest
  • Explore sources of local environmental data and work towards incorporating data into inquiry-based science learning experiences;
  • Receive materials and activities included in the Ocean Sciences Sequence (OSS) curriculum on Climate Change developed by UC Berkeley Lawrence Hall of Science
  • Become familiar with and utilize Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to foster "three dimensional" learning through Cross Cutting Concepts, Core Disciplinary Ideas, and Science and Engineering Practices.

  • Substitute Teacher reimbursement
  • 15 STEM Clock Hours (free)
  • Ocean Sciences Sequence curriculum
  • Lunch and light refreshments
  • $100 stipend upon implementation in classroom

The Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is managed by the Washington State Department of Ecology in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. One of 29 National Estuarine Research Reserves around the country, it focuses on long-term research, monitoring, and education about estuaries.

EarthGen is excited to share t his cohort-based learning opportunity designed for teachers across Washington State to deepen their Climate Justice learning. Climate Justice League, Assemble! When: Feb 15 2024 9AM - 3PM Where: Good Shepherd Center in Seattle Climate Justice League, Assemble!  is an  in-person offering on  February 15th from 9am-3pm at the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle  and will provide teachers opportunities to critically define climate justice education and improve their understanding of Anti-racist and Anti-colonial science teaching. Educators will be invited to participate in online communities of practice following the workshop. OpenSciEd Community of Practice in WA State!

  What is the Community of Practice? The OpenSciEd Community of Practice is a collaboration and professional learning space for middle school and high school teachers (as well as TOSA's supporting OSE science teaching, administrators who wish to engage in deep learning with teacher implementers/early adopters, and OSE facilitators) across Washington State working to implement OpenSciEd instructional materials and deepen their practice around these high-quality instructional materials in a collaborative environment.  This virtual learning community will share best practices, learn together, trouble-shoot issues with implementation, and share resources. The community will meet via Zoom from 4:00-5:30 pm for three sessions.  What is OpenSciEd?
