Apply today! Join us for the OpenSciEd High School Summer Institute.

Dear NWESD Science and District Leaders,

Please share this announcement broadly with any and all High School teachers you think might be interested!

In cooperation between the Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD) and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) through ClimeTime, WA's Regional Science Coordinators are pleased to share that the inaugural OpenSciEd High School Summer Institute is now accepting applications!

This 3-day, in-person workshop will introduce high school teachers to the HS OpenSciEd curriculum and instructional routines that support student sensemaking in secondary science. OpenSciEd is a free, high quality, NGSS-aligned science curriculum. The HS biology, chemistry, and physics courses have been field tested by WA state teachers.  Feedback from WA state teachers and students helped guide the revision process.

The first units in each course are now publicly available to be used in your classroom. The materials are an Open Education Resource (OER), meaning they are free for all educators and students to use, customize, and share. In the next year, the rest of the units for HS biology, chemistry and physics courses will be made available.

The focus will be on three specific units:

Locations and times

  • August 1 - August 3, 2023 | 8:00 am-4:00 pm each day

  • ESD 112 | 2500 NE 65th Ave. Vancouver, WA 98661

In addition to the HS OpenSciEd curriculum introduction and unit specific training, we are offering an optional OpenSciEd Facilitator Training. As an ESD network, we are building a cohort of district leaders and classroom teachers to lead future professional learning in OpenSciEd as the use of these materials expands across the state. Learn more about the professional learning program that supports the OpenSciEd curriculum and gain confidence and skills to train teachers at your school, district, or across the state.

Optional Wrap Around OpenSciEd Facilitator Training

He will be hosting an informational session March 30th at 4-5 pm about OpenSciEd HS curriculum scope and sequence, provide a brief overview of the units that have been released publicly, and be available to answer questions you may have about the OpenSciEd High School Summer Institute.
