Argument-Driven Inquiry for Middle and High School Teachers

 

Description:

Teachers can use the Argument-Driven instructional approach to provide students with authentic and educative lab activities that will enable them to learn the core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and scientific practices they need to explain natural phenomena and also gives students an opportunity to learn how to read, write, and speak in the context of science. The Argument-Driven Instructional model makes labs for students by providing them opportunities to share, critique, and revise their ideas throughout the laboratory experience.

 

Yes, there is focus on climate science. However, the Science and Engineering Practices of Argument from Evidence and Constructing Explanations can be applied to all science disciplines.

Science Assessment Updates Greetings from the Science Assessment Team! We hope you can take a few minutes during this exciting time of year to visit the OSPI Science Assessment webpage . We recently updated the site with information about: The Assessment Bill ESSB-2224 Postpones the high school science assessment graduation requirement until the class of 2021. The Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) Will be administered for the first time in spring 2018. The assessments fulfill the federal requirement that students be tested once in science at each level: elementary, middle, and high school. Will be online in grades 5, 8, and 11. Will assess the Washington State 2013 K-12 Science Learning Standards ( Next Generation Science Standards ).  Training Tests, Items Specifications, and Lessons Learned for Scoring Student Work are coming later this fall. [STATE-LEVEL] ASSESSMENT SHOULD NOT DRIVE INSTRUCTION

Regional Science Coordinators are developing an online orientation class for the new Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS). We have involved OSPI’s Science Assessment lead, Dawn Cope and OSPI’s Director of K-12 Science, Ellen Ebert, in the process as well as Lois Sherwood from WSTA. In our first planning meeting, I wanted to hear the most important message from each person at the [virtual] table. Dawn Cope of the assessment department was the first to speak up and quite pointedly said, “assessment does not drive instruction.” That pretty much spoke for the rest of us.
