We're in space!

The 2017 Genes in Space winning experiments, designed by Elizabeth (Liza) Reizis and Sophia Chen, launched aboard from Kennedy Space Center on April 2nd, 2018. Liza and Sophia along with their mentors, family, and members of the Genes in Space team watched the launch from Florida. The next day they were treated to a tour of Kennedy Space Center.

The excitement isn't over. After a brief trip, Liza and Sophia's experiments are now the ISS and will be conducted over the next few weeks. Stay tuned to Genes in Space on social media for updates.

Join us for the last #GenesInSpaceChat

April 10th, 8pm EDT - "What comes after PCR?" with mentor Kiana Mohajeri

Thanks to those who participated in this year's #GenesInSpaceChats. If you missed them, the videos can be found on our Facebook page.  For advice from this year's Chat hosts, check out the Tips for Contestants section of the Genes in Space blog.

Hope to Chat with you April 10th!

Lab in a Box update: bringing DNA science to more schools

Genes in Space's biotechnology loaner program, miniPCR Lab in a Box, allows teachers to bring hands-on DNA science and thousands of dollars in cutting-edge biotechnology equipment and reagents into their classroom for the cost of a small shipping fee. 9 loans have gone out since the start of 2018 to schools in Texas, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, New York, Alabama, and even Alaska!

From Museum of Flight: Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) Recruitment now underway!

FROM THIS PAGE: [ LINK ] Washington Aerospace Scholars (WAS) is an online distance learning course and summer experience specifically designed for high school sophomores and juniors interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The online curriculum is a University of Washington college course focused on NASA’s space exploration program as well as topics in earth and space science. If they successfully complete the online curriculum, students are invited to participate in multi-day summer experiences that provide them to the opportunity to work with STEM professionals, NASA scientists, university students and STEM educators. Why should a student participate in WAS? Participating in the online distance learning course helps students understand the components and expectations for college level coursework while they are still in high school, particularly the importance of good time management and the ability to prioritize. Being able to state on a resu...
